One of my goals for 2025 is to be more intentional about growing spiritually. With this goal in mind, I started a bible in a year reading plan with a friend on January 1st. With my busy schedule, balancing a full-time job, being a wife, motherhood, and the everyday tasks of caring for a home, I have somehow managed to keep up with the daily readings.
The Bible plan started in the Old Testament in Genesis, and I am currently in the Book of Joshua. So far, I have learned a fair amount about God’s character, and I feel my relationship with Him is growing. In this blog post, I will share what I am learning about God.
God cares
As I read the Old Testament, I have become more aware of how much God cares. One example of God’s care for His people is in Exodus 2. When the Israelites were in slavery to the Egyptians, they cried out to God in their distress, and He heard their cry and rescued them. This story, and many other stories I have read so far, have given me a deeper understanding of the scripture in 1 Peter 5:7. The bible verse says that we should cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us.
God truly cares for us. I used to meditate on 1 Peter 5:7 and hope it was true. Now, this verse is starting to take deep root in my heart. Reading these stories in the Old Testament has strengthened my faith and trust in God in this area of my life.
God is considerate
God is so considerate. For example, in Leviticus, when the people of Israel had to offer sacrifices to atone for their sins, God provided alternative options for those who may not have had the means to get certain sacrifices, for example, a lamb or bull.
Also, in Numbers 27, the daughters of a man named Zelophehad, who died in the wilderness, reasoned with Moses to receive their father’s inheritance since he did not have a son to give it to. Moses took their case before God, and God honored their request. These stories have helped me see that God is thoughtful. He is mindful of our circumstances and will meet us where we are.

God is faithful, even when we break faith.
God knew that the Israelites would break their faith in Him after He delivered them from the Egyptians, and they journeyed into the land that He promised to give to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. A generation of the Israelites did not go into the promised land due to their disobedience, but God kept his promise as he allowed their children to go into the land. God kept the children alive in the wilderness for 40 years until the older generation died. He was faithful to them because of His promise to their fathers. He continues to stand by His Word even today when we are faithless.
God is merciful
On the Israelites’ journey to cross the Jordan into the promised land, at times, God would bring plagues on the Israelites due to their disobedience. When these plagues happened, Moses would pray for the people, and God would listen. He did not have to listen to Moses’s prayer, and He could have destroyed everyone, but He didn’t because of His mercy.
In Numbers 21, the Israelites spoke against God and called the food God was giving them in the wilderness worthless. Then, God sent fiery serpents among the people. These serpents bit the people, and a lot of them died. After Moses prayed for the people, God was merciful and told Moses to make a bronze fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who got bit when they saw the serpent would live. What a merciful God!
God is holy
In the book of Deuteronomy, God told the Israelites to purge the evil from their midst. God destroyed people and whole cities because of wickedness. He did not want the wickedness of those people who did not obey Him to influence the Israelites to break their faith and go after other gods. God says to be holy for I am holy; 1 Peter 1:16. This bible verse has more depth since I have context from the Old Testament. God does not play about holiness.
In conclusion
In conclusion, to build a genuine relationship with God or anyone, you must learn about them for yourself, which will require time and attention. I am enjoying this journey of reading through the Bible for a year and am looking forward to learning more about God and cultivating an authentic relationship with Him.
